Ratha Saptami Festival – Salutations to the Brilliant Sun

Dear All,

Hari Om.

The auspicious day of Ratha Saptami falls on 30th January (tomorrow) in the year 2012. Ratha Saptami falls on the seventh day in the Shukla Paksha of Magha month. This day is marked by Sun’s northerly movement (Uttarayana) of vernal equinox starting from Capricorn (Makara). It is symbolically represented in the form of the Sun God Surya turning his Ratha (Chariot) drawn by seven horses (representing seven colours) towards the northern hemisphere, in a north-easterly direction.

Sun is the life-source for all life on this earth. It is auspicious to daily do salutation to Sun who is the life-giving Source of brilliance and light.

On Ratha Saptami day, a stotra in praise of Sun called “Aditya Hrudayam” is chanted. This Stotra was taught to Lord Rama by Sage Agastha on the battlefield. This Stotra is known for its extreme power in bestowing good health and brilliance in life. In our childhood, I clearly remember taking a special head bath with Jilledu leaf on head along with 2 paise coin 🙂 on this Rathe Sapatmi day. Jilledu leaf is supposed to take off heat from the body and restore balance.

Watch Youtube Video containing a nice rendition of this Stotram.

Scientific Verification of Vedic Knowledge

Dear All,

Namaste. Hari Om.

Vedas, which are considered the treasure-store of Knowledge of the Self, consist revelations to the ancient sages and seers. The branches of knowledge covered in Vedas and related Scriptural texts range from mathematics, geology, cosmology and the like. Many erudite Scientists are wonder-struck at the depth of the knowledge contained in the Vedas.

When I was a graduate student, I had a friend who was adept in Vedic Mathematics. His skill in solving equations was acquired from the branch in Vedas dealing with Mathematics.

If you read “Kapilopadesha” in Bhagavatam (Instruction of Kapila to his mother), you will find a very detailed knowledge of development of foetus in mother’s womb which is a very evolved piece of knowledge.

I came across a wonderful video on you tube which highlight this knowledge hidden in Vedas, and which throws light on the ancientness of India. Truly, this is a moment to be grateful to the Sages and Seers of yore for giving us this great treasure.

You can watch the videos here:

Hope you enjoy these videos and are proud of the scientific and vedantic heritage that we are part of.

Spiritual Practice and Worldly Attachments

Dear All,

Hari Om !

I was looking through the interesting website of the organization Spiritual Research Foundation, which covers all the scientific aspects of spirituality, chanting, meditation, japa, kirtan etc and also gives step-by-step instructions in spiritual practice, spiritual healing etc.

While browsing through, I came across this very interesting image on Spirituality and Worldly relations. One cannot practise spirituality and intend to scale the heights to reach the Divine, while still being in the clutches of many binding worldly attachments. All saints have been mocked at by this so called world and their families. But God will sever the worldly bindings so one can give himself/herself completely unto Him. The following figure illustrates this point. Hope you like it !!

God-Gene: Spirituality Encoded !!

Dear All !

Hari Om !
Om Namo Narayanaya !

The God Gene

Article on “Reflections On God Gene

This is an interesting article, written by Uncle Prof Kurup, who is a wonderful scientist himself. A scientist in NIH Washington has claimed that through his vast experiments in many subjects, he found the Gene that is responsible for the Spirituality inherited in Human beings. He said that this gene is the cause for the tendencies of spirituality.

This claim of his and the book “The God-Gene” has faced much opposition from the orthodox christian churches and many other diehard cultists.

But this concept is not new to Vedanta !

Though it is true that we should not reduce Spirituality to a set of genes, Vedanta proclaims to us that we accumulate Vasanas or Samskars from our previous births. But these Vasanas are also beyond the grasp of human intellect (like genetic encoding). Our mind itself is invisible, and cannot be grasped anywhere in the laboratory.

Actually, this is interesting, because we all might have experienced this fact, that if there is some spiritual tendency in us, our grandfathers/grandmothers or our ancestors would have influenced us genetically and otherwise also.

Recently on my trip to India, I spoke more with my Ammamma (maternal grandmother) about my Great-Grand Father (my Ammamma’s father). He was a deeply spiritual person. He was a disciple of Sri Avadhutendra Swami, and many a times his Guruji stayed with him in his house. He was initiated and was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and Lord Rama. My Great Grand Father had written many Stotras and devotional poems.

I thanked my Ammamma happily for this inheritance of God-Gene !! From my Grandfather (paternal), I hope and wish to have inherited, because he is a great devotee.

Enjoy this article.

Aparna Hari

Mystic Lotus Centers in Yoga System

Beta Cell Lotus

Lotus has a very spiritual significance in the Hindu religion. It is considered a very sacred flower, first among those fit to worship God. All the divine incarnations are represented to have lotus-like limbs. Patanjali, who is the master of a Philosophical system of Yoga says that the centers in our body represent lotus and the biggest lotus is found on the crown of the head – called the “Sahasrara Chakra” or the “Thousand-petalled Lotus”.When I was doing my modeling of the architecture of beta-cell network (beta-cells are insulin secreting cells in the pancreas), we came up with a new architecture of arranging them in the following pattern (see figure). This is called 3-D Hexagonal Closest Packing (3D HCP). The following picture also represents the unit cell of the entire structure of network. Our body might have millions and millions of such structures. You can see that the 3-dimensional arrangement of beta-cells have amazingly given a “2-Dimensional Lotus” shape. When I showed this to Hari, he said that the Yogis have looked into the very fundamental organization of the body through meditation and thus have found that its organization is actually a vast 3-D Lotus.

Sanskrit, Physics and Vedanta – MUST SEE Video

One of the members of the local Bhagavadgeeta Group in Milwaukee has forwarded these links to us. These are very interesting videos containing some valuable information from a renowned physicist and colleague of Dr Albert Einstein, and who wrote english translations of Upanisads. These videos contain talks between Jefferey Mishlove and Dean Brown. Hari and I found these videos very interesting.

I am posting these links here:

Dave Brown on Sanskrit: Part-1
Dave Brown on Sanskrit: Part-2
Dave Brown on Sanskrit: Part-3

I have taken a book from our library which contains wonderful etymological information – It is called Word Origins. In that book also I found, how many sanskrit words have been come into usage and how many of them have been adapted well.

Have a good read and watch !
