Gita Study: Class 27

Verse 2.32

yadrcchaya copapannam svargadvaramapavrtam| sukhinah ksatriyah partha labhante yuddhamidrsam||

  • Krishna says that Arjuna was fortunate for getting to be on the side of the battle defending dharma. Not all kshatriyas would have this privilege.

Verse 2.33

atha cettvamimam dharmyam sangramam na karisyasi| tatah svadharmam kirtim ca hitva papamavapsyasi||

  • The word “dharmyam” is again repeated here to point out that Arjuna was waging a war that was not opposed to dharma.
  • The saying that by not doing a certain action one incurs papa (sin), has to be understood carefully. Action can produce a result; inaction cannot. But when a prescribed action is not done, usually the person indulges in some other undesirable action which would lead to papa.

Verse 2.34 – 36

akirtim capi bhutani kathayisyanti te’vyayam | sambhavitasya cakirtirmaranadatiricyate ||

bhayadranaduparatam mamsyante tvam maharathah | yesam ca tvam bahumato bhutva yasyasi laghavam ||

avacyavadamsca bahun vadisyanti tavahitah | nindantastava samarthyam tato duhkhataram nu kim ||

  • In these three verses Krishna gives a laukika, worldly, reason for why Arjuna should not retreat from the battle.

Verse 2.37

hato va prapsyasi svargam jitva va bhoksyase mahim | tasmaduttistha kaunteya yuddhaya krtaniscayah ||

  • Wrapping up the dharma and society-based arguments, Krishna now says that Arjuna would be the winner whatever may be the outcome of the battle. If victorious, Arjuna would enjoy the kingdom; if defeated he would reach heaven.

Verse 2.38

sukhaduhke same krtva labhalabhau jayajayao | tato yuddhaya yujyasva naivam papamavapsyasi ||

  • In this verse, Krishna lays the seed of Karma Yoga which will be the next topic after completing Sankhya. Action done considering pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat to be the same, will not lead to any papa.
  • This topic will be examined in detail in the coming verses.
